Internet Advertising Sees More Growth than TV Advertising in the UK

  • Internet advertising spending in the UK is expected to grow by 11.3% in 2012, which is five times the growth that TV advertising will see (1.5%)

Steady Increase in Online Advertising Spending

  • eMarketer predicts that £5.09 billion will be spent advertising online this year in the UK, a 12% increase over 2011
  • According to the same study, £6.22 billion will be spent advertising online next year (11% increase)
  • This growth is expected to continue into 2014, when £6.72 billion will be spent advertising online (an increase of 10% over 2013)

  • Paid search advertising in the UK is expected to continue to hold more than a 50% share of total UK online ad spending
  • This year, £2,778 million will be spent on paid search advertising, a 9.7% increase over 2011
  • This number is expected to increase by 11% to reach £3,034 million in 2013 and again by 6.5% to reach £2,850 million in 2013

  • According to eMarketer , display advertising spending is expected to hold a 27% share of total UK online ad spending
  • Next year, display advertising growth will increase again by 1.1% to reach £1,361 million
  • By 2014, £1,529 million will be spent on display ads

Mobile Advertising Takes a Larger Budget Share

  • Paid search advertising in the UK is expected to increase steadily over the next few years
  • This year, £314.7 million will be spent on paid search advertising, a 63.7% increase over 2011
  • This number is expected to increase by 62% to reach £503.1 million in 2013 and again by 63% to reach £792.3 million in 2014

Social Media

More People Using Social Networks in the UK

  • According to eMarketer , more than 55% of the UK's internet users will be active on social networks, an 8% increase over 2011
  • Next year , 57.7% of users - 27.7 million people - will be using social networks in the UK
  • By 2014, 29.4 million people - 60% of internet users - will be using social networking.
