Twitter, Facebook and in the past week Google Plus, are all places where firms flock with hopes of engaging with their customers; making them feel wanted and looked after.

Ben is 18-years-old. What he lacks in cleverness he makes up for in enthusiasm, and is always looking to build on his rather empty CV in the hope of going to university.

Through his contacts – maybe his mother – he managed to get a job as the social media intern for Shippam’s Paste, a manufacturer of low-cost sandwich spreads, which have graced many a school lunchbox over the years.

He set up the company’s first Twitter account -@ShippamsPaste - and immediately began engaging with customers.

It worked. Ben was so effective that within three weeks Shippam’s Paste had over 7,000 followers. Ben’s boss, Paul, swiftly promoted him to social media executive intern. Ben and his followers were thrilled.

Ben would take to Twitter to engage (“whats your favourite shippams paste! retweet it to me!”), share tales of life in the Shippam’s office (“pauls got a keyring that makes spooky noises its really annoying it goes wooo”) and even offer advice (“theres no vegetarian pastes sorry but why not try the crab spread its only crabs”).

Ben was also completely fictitious. And absolutely nothing to do with Shippam’s.

But to dwell on that is to miss the point. Last week came the news Ben’s followers had been dreading: “Account suspended”. Everyone knew he wasn’t real, but his persona was so endearing that people simply didn’t care.

The fans were up in arms, and calls for a boycott were only marginally tongue-in-cheek. Shippam’s just didn’t get it, fans complained, and soon #paste trended across theUK.

Mr Smith says at first they weren’t quite sure how to react. For a while, they wondered if Ben actually was a plucky intern, stowed away in an office somewhere within the company. When they were sure it was not a member of their staff they got in touch with Twitter and, soon enough, Ben was no more.

Shippam’s’ problem was one that faces many major brands. While Ben was utterly harmless, other companies aren’t always that lucky.

Brandjacking – meaning simply to hijack a brand – ranges from humorous accounts like the lovable Ben right up to sophisticated fraud programs that lose companies millions in sales and has terrible effects on reputation.

The techniques are relatively simple. Handbag.com, for example, fell victim to a counterfeit site named handbagcom.com. The fake site’s makers would buy advertising on popular search engines and rely on the victim not glancing up at the false URL which, even with a quick glance, is easily passable.

After a day of what can only be described as uproar, Twitter reopened the @ShippamsPaste account. Ben was back, but only for a fleeting moment, tweeting: “good bye it was fun but I’ve got to stop now because of problems”.

Shippam’s say they have no immediate plans to launch an official Twitter feed and so, for now, their Twitter presence sits still, leaving Ben’s fans to forever wonder if he ever plucked up the courage to talk to the girl in the chip shop.

Following on from Part One, the introduction of Social Media Marketing, and Part Two Twitter and Facebook we now finalise the series with LinkedIn.

Using LinkedIn to Link Up

LinkedIn is great for corporate people. It may not be the most visually appealing of the social media sites, but it is an excellent way to keep track of all the important contacts you will meet in your industry (and others).

Use it to:

Keep track and keep in touch with all the people you meet in business. Whenever you meet someone new, find them on LinkedIn and connect.

Showcase your skills, experience and education. Think of it as your online CV.

Provide people with references. Ask people to recommend you and your work, then share them with the world on your profile.

Look out for employment opportunities.

Join and create LinkedIn groups that are associated with your industry. These are invaluable places to ask for feedback, request help or talk about the industry.

Pull other important content into your linked in profile e.g. your blog, videos, presentations etc.

Some final advice on Social Media Marketing for your Company

Be consistent with your brand and tone of voice

Monitor your brand mentions on the internet using a free tool like Google iReader.

Handle negative comments constructively and always professionally.

Keep separate social media for your private use and keep it private.

Unlike your personal profiles, make sure that your privacy settings for your business are all public so that everyone can see what you’re doing.

Use Google Analytics on your website so that you can monitor and measure your social efforts.

Keep at it, using Advanced Google Analytics we can see that from social media visitors stay on our clients websites sometimes up to twice as long, and are three to four times more likely to buy or to do some other evidenced engagement like download a brochure etc.

Market your brand – Part One

Building strong brand awareness is an important part of your business marketing strategy, using Social Media can have a huge impact on your brand if done correctly. Did you know that Coca Cola has 34.5 million fans on Facebook?

When you’re starting out in business, it’s all about making people aware of your brand. The some businesses can be extremely competitive but luckily thanks to the popularity of social media, it’s never been easier to get your name ‘out there.’

Over the next 3 days I’m going to share with you how businesses can use social media to make sure that your business is the hottest name on everyone’s lips!

Social Media Brand Protection

If you’re not already using social media for your business, what are you waiting for? Get yourself signed up to the most popular social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and Flickr and start using them on a regular basis. Like with most things in life, with social media, the more you put in, the more you’ll get out of it.

A word of warning; preserve your brand. Reserve your name/brands before someone else does so you get consistent URL addresses! Did you know that the Coca Cola Facebook page was originally set-up by a couple of friends wanting to tell everyone about their love for the drink. Before they knew it they had literally tens of thousands of people following them and Coca Cola had no control over what was being written about them. Eventually the company came to an agreement with the page owners and they are now employed by the company to continue to build on the Business Pages.

If you are already using social media, don’t get complacent. Always keep up to date with what is happening and try not to neglect some social media in favour of others. When you’re trying to build a brand, you need to be everywhere, often. There is nothing more off putting than following a link from a website to Facebook or Twitter to find 3 short postings which are now more than a year old.

Set up a blog

A blog is the foundation to any social media presence. It adds credibility, helps establish your voice, and is the starting point for pushing content out to the internet. Here are some tips.

Use a WordPress blog, preferably on your website and on the same hosting as your website.

Get the latest SEO plug-ins (these are usually free, but may require some expert configuration)
- Some of the plug-ins will help structure the blog for search engine optimisation (SEO).
- Other plug-ins will submit the blog to Google, Twitter etc. each time you publish an article, which is a real time saver and also highly effective SEO.

Make sure there is a clear route from your blog to the rest of your site (e.g. Use the same navigation header) if people find your blog you need to make sure that they navigate to the rest of your website.

Link your articles back to pages within your website

Go visual with YouTube and Flickr

Did you know that after Google and Facebook, YouTube is the most popular website, receiving over 123 million visitors per day? When it comes to photo sharing, currently Flickr is head and shoulders above the rest.

Use YouTube to:

Create your own branded channel (reserve your name before someone else takes it.)

Upload videos of your products or services.

Provide ‘How to’ guides.

Show yourself at work and your staff at work

Ask for feedback on products or services.

Consider syndication to other sites like Vimeo and Daily Motion.

When uploading, make sure you use the descriptions and keywords/tags available.

Promote your new videos using your blog, Twitter and Facebook.

Use Flickr to:

Upload image galleries of your latest products or services.

Post images of your work in progress.

Check out what your competition is upto.

Gather feedback.

Consider syndication to other sites such as Picasa.

Promote your new images using your blog, Twitter and Facebook.

Remember that blogging is the starting block for Social Media as it gives you valuable content not only for your website but also for your Social Channels.

In Part Two I will be giving tips on the two big contenders Facebook and Twitter…..
